Why Shoreline?
At Shoreline Counseling, the name represents more than just a practice, it embodies my personal journey and therapeutic philosophy.
As an avid surfer and someone who spent more time in the ocean than on land growing up, I've experienced moments when the sea turned volatile without warning, and when the shoreline seemed impossibly distant. In those moments, I learned profound lessons about resilience, patience, and the human capacity to keep going even when safety feels out of reach.
This experience mirrors what I witness in therapy. Life's unexpected storms of trauma, grief, anxiety, addiction, and depression can leave us feeling adrift and overwhelmed. We wonder if we’ll ever find solid ground again. The shoreline represents that place of safety and stability that can feel desperately out of reach during our darkest moments.
But here’s what I know: with support, with learning to read the patterns of our emotions, with skills to navigate what feels overwhelming, we can find our way back. Sometimes the journey is long. Sometimes we need to rest and gather strength. But healing is possible, and you don’t have to make the journey alone.
At Shoreline Counseling, I offer both a compass and companionship. Whether you're facing difficult transitions, struggling with anxiety or depression, working through trauma, or seeking freedom from shame and old patterns, I'm here to help you reach steadier ground where you can find clarity, strength, and hope again.
The shoreline is closer than you think.

Nathan Wert, MA, ALC, NCC, IFS Practitioner
A trauma-informed therapist based in Mountain Brook, serving Birmingham, AL, and surrounding areas. I specialize in working with adults, teens, and athletes facing challenges like trauma, anxiety, performance issues, identity struggles, and sex addiction. My approach blends Internal Family Systems (IFS), Brainspotting, and somatic work for deep, lasting change. I seek to create a warm, safe haven where your story can unfold naturally. I believe deeply in the power of the counseling relationship and consider it a genuine privilege to walk alongside you on your journey. With compassion and care, I offer steady support while honoring your unique path toward healing and growth.
I grew up in the beautiful Nassau, The Bahamas, before moving to Birmingham to attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham. I have called Birmingham home ever since. Alongside my professional journey, I also competed internationally on two national sports teams for The Bahamas, which led me to a part-time role as a beach volleyball coach with a local Birmingham club. I have always had a passion for helping people and believe in creating a supportive, collaborative space for growth and healing. Outside of counseling, I enjoy spending time outdoors, competing in beach volleyball tournaments, painting, reading, and gathering with friends for board games.
