Virtual Counseling For Clients in The Bahamas

Trauma-informed counseling and mental health therapy services with an understanding of Bahamian culture and context.

Welcome

Welcome to Shoreline Counseling! I’m Nathan Wert, a Bahamian therapist based in Birmingham, Alabama, providing virtual therapy for adults, adolescents, and athletes living in The Bahamas. Whether you’re navigating trauma, anxiety, performance concerns, eating disorders, identity struggles, or compulsive sexual behaviors, I aim to create a safe, confidential space where your story can unfold naturally.

I grew up in Nassau, The Bahamas, before moving to Birmingham to attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Alongside my professional journey, I competed internationally on two national sports teams for The Bahamas and now also coach locally. My background gives me a personal understanding of Bahamian culture, sports pressures, and the unique context of living in a small community.

If you’d like to learn more about my full journey and approach, you can read more on my About page.

What Exactly Is Counseling?

Counseling is a space where you can talk openly about what's really going on without judgment, without having to have it all figured out, and without worrying about burdening someone you know.

It's not about fixing you, you're not broken. But sometimes we get stuck, or life throws things at us that we weren't equipped to handle, and we need help finding our way through. That's where therapy comes in.

This isn't the same as talking to a friend, family member, or pastor. While those relationships matter and can provide support, therapy is different. I'm trained specifically to help you heal, not just listen. Trauma, anxiety, and painful experiences don't just live in your thoughts. They get stored in your body, in your nervous system, in the way you react before you even realize you're reacting. As a licensed counselor with specialized training in trauma and body-based approaches, I know how to help you work through these things in ways that create actual, lasting change.

In our work together, we'll explore what's keeping you stuck, what patterns keep showing up in your life, and what it looks like to actually feel better, not just cope better. We'll work at your pace, using approaches that fit how you process and heal. Some sessions might be more talk-based. Others might involve working with your body, your nervous system, or different parts of yourself that hold different emotions and experiences.

The goal isn't to become someone new. It's to rediscover who you are underneath all the weight you've been carrying.

Who Is Counseling For?

Counseling is for anyone who feels like something needs to change but doesn't know where to start.

You might be:

  • An adolescent trying to navigate identity, relationships, school pressure, or family conflict

  • A young adult feeling lost, anxious, or unsure about your next steps

  • Someone dealing with trauma that still affects how you see yourself and the world

  • Struggling with addiction or behaviors you can't seem to stop

  • Working through betrayal, whether in relationships, family, or friendships

  • Feeling numb, disconnected, or like you're just going through the motions

  • Constantly anxious, overwhelmed, or stuck in your own head

  • A high performer who can't seem to slow down, rest, or turn off the drive to achieve

  • An athlete experiencing mental blocks that are affecting your performance

You don't need to have a diagnosis or a crisis to be here, you just need to be ready to try something different.

A Note About Telehealth and Confidentiality

All of my sessions are conducted online via secure video. And here's what matters: research consistently shows that telehealth counseling is just as effective as in-person therapy). Studies have found no significant difference in outcomes for issues like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and trauma when therapy is done via video versus face-to-face. In fact, many people find telehealth more accessible and comfortable as you're in your own space, there's no commute, and it's easier to fit into your life.

The connection, the healing, the work, it all happens just as meaningfully through the screen.

Regarding confidentiality, I don't live in The Bahamas anymore, but I understand it's a small community where privacy matters even more. Confidentiality is absolutely essential to me. I will never share that you're a client unless there's a safety concern that legally requires it. Your privacy is always protected.

For virtual sessions, please make sure you're in a private, secure space with a reliable internet connection so we can do this work without interruption or worry.

Please Note: Virtual services are provided in accordance with applicable laws and professional regulations. Clients must be physically located in The Bahamas at the time of service.

About My Professional Background

I earned my Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Liberty University, where I built a strong foundation in evidence-based therapeutic approaches.

During my master's program, I completed a year-long internship at a private practice in Birmingham under a trauma-trained clinician who was both a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT). That experience shaped how I work today. I learned how trauma lives in the body, how the nervous system holds onto what we can't always put into words, and how to help people heal from complex trauma and addictive patterns in ways that go beyond traditional talk therapy.

I'm currently an Associate Licensed Counselor in Alabama (The Bahamas does not have licensure requirements for counselors, so holding an Alabama license demonstrates my commitment to meeting professional standards). This means I receive two hours of clinical supervision every week from an experienced licensed counselor. Supervision isn't just a requirement, it's an essential part of how I continue growing as a therapist. It gives me a space to reflect on my work, get guidance on complex cases, and ensure I'm always providing the best possible care for my clients. It keeps me sharp, accountable, and constantly learning.

Since graduating, I've continued deepening my training in body-based and parts-work modalities because I've seen how powerful they are for creating real, lasting change.
